MODULE 6 OF 8

ArtRage 6

Real paint behaviour — oils that smear, canvas that has grain, knives that scrape. Where digital stops feeling like a computer.

4 LESSONS  ·  ABOUT 40 MINUTES EACH

LESSON 22

ArtRage Orientation

ArtRage is not a smaller Photoshop. It is a simulation of wet paint sitting on a textured surface, and almost everything odd about it makes sense once you understand that. This lesson covers the canvas and its grain, the tool set, and the .ptg file that holds the whole simulation together.

LESSON 23

Oils, Palette Knife & Blending

The Oil Brush is the tool ArtRage was built around, and its settings describe a physical brush rather than a digital one. Once you know what Loading, Thinners and Insta-Dry actually do, you can get dry-brush texture, wet-into-wet blending and thick impasto out of the same tool without changing brushes.

LESSON 24

Watercolour, Pencils & Inks

Oils sit on top of the canvas. Dry media dig into it, and watercolour sinks into it. All three are driven by the same thing — the grain of the surface you chose in L22 — which is why the same pencil can look like a soft graphite smudge on one canvas and a scratchy conte line on another. This lesson covers pencil, ink and watercolour, and how to combine them in one painting.

LESSON 25

Stencils, Tracing, References & the Custom Brush

These are ArtRage's power tools: physical stencils you can paint against, a tracing image projected onto the canvas, reference images pinned beside your work, and a brush you design yourself. The lesson finishes with the PSD bridge — the fact that ArtRage both imports and exports Photoshop files with layers, blend modes and groups intact, which is what joins this module to the Photoshop one.
