MODULE 2 OF 8

Digital Foundations

The handful of ideas that separate digital from paper. Layers is the big one — it changes what a drawing even is.

LESSON 05

From Paper to Pixels

On paper the surface is decided for you the moment you pick up the sheet. Digitally you have to decide it yourself, before the first mark: how many pixels, which colour space, which file format. Get those three right at the start and everything downstream works; get them wrong and you find out weeks later when the picture prints blurry.

LESSON 06

Line Control on Glass

Your lines on paper are already good. On glass they will feel wrong for a week or two, and there are specific reasons why: the ink appears slightly off the nib, the surface is slicker, and the small screen tempts you into drawing from the wrist. This lesson names each problem and gives you the fix, including how much stabilization to use and when it starts making you worse.

LESSON 07

Layers

This is the most important lesson in the course. Layers are the one thing digital gives you that paper physically cannot: the ability to keep your construction, your line, your colour and your light as separate objects that never destroy each other. Everything in the modules after this one assumes you think in a stack.

LESSON 08

Selections & Masks

A selection is a temporary fence that stops paint going where you do not want it. A mask is that fence saved onto a layer so you can change your mind about it forever. Together they are how you stop erasing things you might want back, which is the habit that separates a file you can rescue from one you cannot.
