MODULE 3 OF 8

Drawing Fundamentals

Construction, proportion, perspective and gesture — the skills you already have, sharpened by tools that let you check your own work.

5 LESSONS  ·  ABOUT 40 MINUTES EACH

LESSON 09

Construction

Construction is the difference between recording a shape you can see and building a form you can turn around in your head. In this lesson you stop drawing outlines and start assembling objects out of boxes, cylinders, spheres and cones. Digital layers let you keep the scaffolding forever instead of erasing it.

LESSON 10

Proportion & Measuring

Proportion is not about getting sizes right in absolute terms - it is about getting the relationships between sizes right. This lesson covers comparative measurement, sight-size, plumb lines and negative space, and then hands you the one thing digital does better than paper: flipping the canvas horizontally to expose errors your eye has stopped seeing.

LESSON 11

Perspective I

Perspective is not a set of rules you obey, it is a description of what happens to parallel lines when they run away from you. This lesson covers the horizon line, the vanishing point, and one- and two-point setups, plus how to keep a working grid on its own layer so it never contaminates your drawing.

LESSON 12

Perspective II

Three-point perspective, ellipses, and the beginnings of a real environment. Ellipses get most of the room here on purpose: circles in perspective are the single most commonly botched skill in self-taught drawing, and getting them right instantly makes wheels, cups, bottles, barrels and eyes stop looking wrong.

LESSON 13

Gesture & Line of Action

Gesture is drawing what a figure is doing before you draw what it looks like. It is fast, deliberately rough, and it is the layer everything else in Module 3 sits on top of. Thirty seconds of good gesture will save you an hour of pushing a stiff, correctly-proportioned, completely lifeless drawing around.
